On 21st March, 1918, the day on which the great German offensive started to the south of Arras, the 5th London battalion of 169 Brigade, 56th Division left their billets at Anzin-St Aubin in the north of Arras and moved into a series of posts in the nearby front line. It was a difficult relief with the enemy artillery very active and there were some casualties for the battalion, including Ernest Stockwell. |
